Many Ghibli fans were no doubt disappointed when the release date for the studio’s film Kaguya-hime no Monogatari was pushed back to this fall. It was supposed to preview the same day as another Ghibli film, The Wind Rises, which is due out later this month.
At least we’re finally getting a look at Kaguya-hime no Monogatari now. A preview for the film showed on Japanese TV during a variety show’s special on Studio Ghibli. Check it out below.
Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya) is a well-known Japanese folktale about a a baby girl found inside of a stalk of bamboo. Quite a few famous anime series have used the story in one iteration or another, including Inuyasha and Sailor Moon. This version of the story coming out of Studio Ghibli will be directed by Isao Takahata, whose well known titles include Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors the Yamadas. Kaguya-hime no Monogatari will be his first film in 14 years.
I really love the style they’re going with for this movie. It’s made to look a lot like traditional Japanese art, which is very whimsical and really fitting for a folktale. I’m very excited to see the final result.
